The Executive Chairman of Abeokuta North Local Government, Hon. Dr. Lanre Oyegbola Sodipo, has launched an Electric Bike Transportation Empowerment Scheme in partnership with Max E-Bike, with over 40 beneficiaries participating in the first phase of the initiative aimed at alleviating poverty, promoting youth empowerment and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities.

The scheme was officially launched on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, at the OGOO Multipurpose Enterprise building within the Local Government Secretariat, Akomoje, Abeokuta.

The initiative, conceived by the Chairman, is designed to empower beneficiaries, known as Champions, by providing them with access to electric motorcycles under a convenient repayment arrangement that enables them to engage in commercial transportation and gradually pay for the bikes from their earnings. A major feature of the programme is the inclusion of insurance coverage for both riders and passengers, reflecting the administration’s commitment to the welfare and security of the beneficiaries.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Dr. Sodipo explained that his administration remained committed to creating economic opportunities and redistributing wealth through initiatives that enable residents to become self-reliant and take control of their means of livelihood.
He emphasised that the scheme was designed to give beneficiaries the opportunity to establish sustainable sources of income rather than depend solely on conventional employment opportunities.
The Chairman further explained that the inclusion of insurance was a deliberate decision informed by the need to protect beneficiaries against financial challenges that could undermine their economic progress. He noted that many low-income earners struggle to meet medical expenses, which can affect their ability to sustain their businesses and provide for their families.
According to him, a healthy individual is better positioned to pursue financial independence, adding that the insurance component of the scheme would provide an additional layer of protection for the Champions and their passengers.
Hon. Dr. Sodipo also highlighted the importance of embracing technological advancement in the transportation sector, particularly the transition from fuel-powered motorcycles to electric alternatives. He noted that the electric bikes operate on rechargeable batteries, offering an alternative to petrol-powered motorcycles and the associated fuel costs.
He encouraged the beneficiaries to handle the bikes responsibly, maintain them properly and utilise the opportunity to improve their economic circumstances.
In her remarks, the representative of Max E-Bike, Mrs. Aderonke Olubowale, described the electric motorcycles as powerful and technologically advanced, cautioning the beneficiaries against overspeeding and urging them to observe all necessary safety precautions while riding.
She explained that the bikes operate quietly, are powered by rechargeable electric energy rather than petrol, and feature digital components. She further advised the Champions to take proper care of the motorcycles to ensure their durability and optimal performance.
Earlier, the General Manager of OGOO Multipurpose Enterprise, Hon. Adeosun, described the initiative as the first of its kind in the country, noting that the beneficiaries represented the first phase of the programme.
He disclosed that interested residents could apply through OGOO Multipurpose Enterprise for consideration under subsequent phases of the scheme.
Hon. Adeosun explained that OGOO Multipurpose Enterprise is an agency of the Local Government responsible for promoting economic empowerment through business creation, skills acquisition and capacity-building initiatives aimed at making residents self-sufficient.
The Chairman also used the occasion to highlight other empowerment initiatives undertaken by his administration, including an insurance scheme for over 2,500 commercial motorcycle operators in Abeokuta North Local Government. He further mentioned the training of youths in paint production, Adire fabric making and other vocational skills as part of ongoing efforts to promote self-employment and economic development.
The launch was attended by the Leader of the Legislative Arm of Abeokuta North Local Government, Hon. Ajani Erubami; the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. (Mrs.) Mutiat Agbaje; other members of the Local Government Executive Council; the Head of Local Government Administration, Mr. Tajudeen Adesoye; Heads of Departments; representatives of Max E-Bike; officials of OGOO Multipurpose Enterprise; and members of the press.
The Electric Bike Transportation Empowerment Scheme represents another intervention by the Abeokuta North Local Government administration to expand access to economic opportunities, support youth entrepreneurship and promote sustainable livelihoods through innovation
